As part of the decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), the release of stored treated water began in 2023. In this study, we developed a practical tritium monitor to continuously monitor the concentration of tritiated water, as confirmed by batch sampling measurements at the FDNPP. The monitor is arranged with a flow cell detector comprising inexpensive plastic scintillator pellets and incorporating simultaneous measurements by three detectors, a veto detector, and lead shielding to reduce the influence of environmental -rays. The system reached a detection limit of 911 Bq L-1 with a measurement time of 30 min, which is lower than the discharge standard for tritiated water of 1,500 Bq L-1. The system can also qualitatively distinguish the presence of disturbances due to interfering radionuclides other than tritium or background radiation using the -ray spectrum.

The Krypton Recovery Development Facility reached an intended technical target (krypton purity of over 90% and recovery rate of over 90%) by separation and rectification of krypton gas from receiving off-gas produced by the shearing and the dissolution process in the spent fuel reprocessing at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) between 1988 and 2001. In addition, the feasibility of the technology was confirmed through immobilization test with ion-implantation in a small test vessel from 2000 to 2002, using a part of recovered krypton gas. As there were no intentions to use the remaining radioactive krypton gas in the krypton storage cylinders, we planned to release this gas by controlling the release amount from the main stack, and conducted it from February 14 to April 26, 2022. In this work, all the radioactive krypton gas in the cylinders (about 7.110 GBq) was released at the rate of 50 GBq/min or less lower than the maximum release rate from the main stuck stipulated in safety regulations (3.710 GBq/min). Then, the equipment used in the controlled release of radioactive krypton gas and the main process (all systems, including branch pipes connected to the main process) were cleaned with nitrogen gas. Although there were delays due to weather, we were able to complete the controlled release of radioactive krypton gas by the end of April 2022, as originally targeted without any problems such as equipment failure.

Three heating tests targeting temperatures of 2773, 2973 and 3173 K were conducted using an FP release behavior test apparatus equipped with a high-frequency induction furnace and solid FP sampling systems consisting of a thermal gradient tube (TGT) and filters. Irradiated fuel pellets were placed into a tungsten crucible, then loaded into the induction furnace. The temperature was raised continuously at a heating rate of 10 K/s to the targeted temperature and maintained for 500 s in a flowing argon gas atmosphere. The FPs and actinides released from the MOX fuels and deposited in the TGT and filters were quantified by gamma-ray spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. Based on the analysis, the release rates of radionuclides from MOX fuels for FR were obtained and compared with literature data for light water reactor (LWR) fuels. The release rate coefficients of FPs obtained in this study were found to be similar to or lower than the literature values for LWR fuels. It was also found that the release rate coefficient data for actinides were within the range of variation of literature values for LWR fuels.

Aiming to deep understanding and accurate prediction for the emission of light composite particle (LCP) in deuteron-induced reactions, we revise the computational system dedicated to deuteron-induced reactions, called DEURACS. The model by Iwamoto and Harada describing pre-equilibrium cluster emission which was successfully applied to LCP emission innucleon-induced reactions is integrated into the framework of DEURACS, in which the breakup processes of incident deuteron are explicitly taken into account. The phenomenological model by Kalbach is also adopted to estimate the contribution from the direct pickup process. Using the revised DEURACS, we analyze the , , and reactions in the target mass range . Regardless of the targets, the calculation results successfully reproduced the experimental data for each reaction, simultaneously. These results demonstrates that the LCP emission from the pre-equilibrium and compound nucleus processes in deuteron-induced reactions, which occupies a large part of the total LCP emission, can be described by the same theoretical models as used in nucleon-induced reactions when the breakup processes of incident deuteron are properly considered.

Americium-243, one of the most important minor actinides, produces Am after neutron capture. The 744-keV -ray decaying from the ground state of Am has a relatively large -ray emission probability c.a. 66%, however, its uncertainty is as large as 29%. The uncertainty of the -ray emission probability leads to a major factor of the systematic uncertainty on determining an amount of isotope, and therefore the -ray emission probability was measured by using an activation method and an examined level structure of Cm. In this study, the emission probability of 744-keV ray was derived as 66.51.1%, and its uncertainty was improved from 29% to 2%.

In recent years, the demand for intense neutron sources has been increasing in various applications such as nuclear transmutation of high-level radioactive waste and medical radioisotopes production. Deuteron accelerator-based neutron sources are promised as one of the candidates. Therefore, we have developed a code system dedicated for the deuteron-induced reactions, called DEURACS. In the present work, we focus on deuteron-induced neutron production from Li target. The calculated double differential cross sections for reactions at incident energies of 25, 40, and 102 MeV are compared with the measured ones, and the applicability of DEURACS is discussed.

Toward evaluation of deuteron nuclear data, we have been developing a code system dedicated for the deuteron-induced reactions, called DEURACS. In the present work, we make an improvement in DEURACS and apply it to composite-particle emission from deuteron-induced reactions. The calculation using DEURACS reproduces the experimental double-differential cross sections of , , , and reactions on Al and Ni at incident energy of 80 MeV quantitatively well. From the results of the analyses, it is shown that the treatment of inelastic scattering and pick-up reaction processes is important in the calculation of deuteron-induced composite-particle emission.

Fundamental research on fission product (FP) chemistry is underway at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The purpose is to establish a FP chemistry database in each region of a LWR under severe accident conditions. Improvement of FP chemical models based on this database is also an important task of the research. Research outputs are reflected to the research and development of decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) and the enhancement of LWR safety. Four research items have thus been established considering the specific issues of 1F and the priority in the source term research area, as follows: - Effects of boron (B) release kinetics and thermal-hydraulic conditions on FP behavior, - Cesium (Cs) chemisorption and reactions with structural materials, - Establishment of a thermodynamic and thermophysical properties database for FP compounds, - Development of experimental and analytical techniques for the reproduction of FP behavior. In this paper, results and progress of the research are presented.

A disposal measure for fuel debris generated at the accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station has been studied so far. However, physical and chemical properties of the fuel debris have not yet investigated in reactor containment vessels. In order to investigate the safety function of barriers required for disposal of fuel debris, sensitivity analyses for radionuclide migration were carried out, considering with uncertainty of the properties. As a result, it is indicated that it was important for evaluation of fuel debris disposal to obtain the physical and chemical properties of C and I during release to groundwater, in addition to U.

The Tritiated Water Task Force under METI's Committee on Countermeasures for Contaminated Water Treatment for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F) reported that the option of post-dilution offshore release could dispose the tritiated water at a smallest cost in the shortest amount of time. The amount of tritium in the contaminated water at 1F was compared with ones released from nuclear power plants and reprocessing plants as some help for grasping its level of magnitude.

JAEA has estimated the atmospheric releases of radionuclide during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FNPS1) accident by comparing measurements of air concentration of a radionuclide or its dose rate in the environment with the ones calculated by atmospheric transport and deposition model (ATDM). To improve our source term, we are trying to develop more sophisticated estimation method and use new information from severe accident analysis and observation data. As the first step of new trial, we used Cs/Cs ratios of inventories in FNPS1 reactors Unit 1 to 3 and those in surface deposition. By considering temporal change in Cs/Cs ratio of released plume and ATDM simulations, spatial distribution of Cs/Cs ratio in surface deposition was explained. This result can be used to specify from which reactor the dominant release occurred for each time period, and consequently provide useful information to severe accident analysis for the FNPS1 case.

CsI and BO were utilized as a Cs/I compound and a B compound, respectively. Deposited CsI on the thermal gradient tube (TGT), which is exposed to temperatures ranging from 423 K to 1023 K was reacted with vapor/aerosol BO, and then observed to determine how it changed Cs/I decomposition profiles. As a result, vapor/aerosol BO stripped a portion of deposited CsI within a temperature range from 830 K to 920 K to make gaseous CsBO and I. In addition, gaseous I was re-deposited at a temperature range from 530 K to 740 K, while CsBO travelled through the sampling tubes and filters without deposition. It is implied that B influences Cs carriers such as CsBO to transport Cs to the colder regions.
